Abstract

This article explores the transformative journey of the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus (EECMY) from being a mission field to an emerging global mission force. Rooted in its unique holistic theology, the church has integrated evangelism and social action, addressing both the spiritual and physical needs of Ethiopian society. Drawing on key missiological concepts such as missio Dei and the missional church, EECMY has grown into the largest Lutheran church in the world, with nearly 12 million members. The church’s commitment to self-propagation, self-governance, self-theologizing, and self-supportiveness has enabled it to move beyond dependency on foreign mission organizations and take an active role in global missions. Its holistic mission approach integrates gospel proclamation with social justice, healthcare, and economic development, reflecting a deep understanding of the gospel’s relevance to all aspects of life. While the church has made significant strides toward financial independence, challenges remain, particularly in sustaining large development projects. EECMY’s story highlights the need for continued ecumenical collaboration and mutual learning, as no single church can address the complex challenges of global mission alone. Above all, its emphasis upon lay leadership and engagement as crucial for effective evangelism and growth of a church is something to note in our era when many churches in the West are declining in size and influence. EECMY’s governance model, which emphasizes the priesthood of all believers and lay leadership, has been central to its growth. Through its experiences, EECMY offers a model of contextualized mission that can inspire churches worldwide.
